How a Monthly Edit begins

Every Monthly Edit starts the same way: with something I cannot stop thinking about. Sometimes it is a season, sometimes a memory, and sometimes a dessert I had once and wanted to taste again as a cookie.

The first test batch is almost never right. The filling is too sweet, the dough swallows the flavor, or the texture fights the center. So I adjust it and bake it again, usually three or four times, sometimes more, until the cookie tastes the way the idea felt.

The final test is the simplest one: I share it. If people go quiet and reach for a second, it is ready. If they say it is nice, it goes back to the kitchen.

Then it gets one month. That is the rule that keeps the Monthly Edit honest. It arrives, has its moment, and makes room for whatever comes next.
